A fire at an Amazon Web Services data center in the Middle East has triggered cascading failures across critical AI infrastructure. The incident, exacerbated by regional tensions, has left Claude, ChatGPT, and AWS Bedrock grappling with severe network disruptions since March 1, 2026.

Two availability zones—ME-CENTRAL-1 in the UAE and ME-SOUTH-1 in Bahrain—remain offline after external projectiles caused physical damage to power systems. AWS engineers confirm the simultaneous failure of mec1-az2 and mec1-az3 zones has overwhelmed redundancy protocols, creating bottlenecks for data-dependent services.

The outage exposes vulnerabilities in concentrated cloud architectures. Major AI platforms relying on Middle East-based GPU clusters now face extended downtime as AWS advises clients to migrate workloads to unaffected regions. Market analysts warn of potential Ripple effects across crypto markets tied to cloud-dependent Web3 projects.
